While heartburn is extremely common in Americans, it is not something to be taken lightly. Chronic heartburn can be a symptom of a more serious condition, Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD), which can lead to serious problems of the esophagus including esophageal cancer.

GERD is defined as a clinical condition that occurs when the reflux of stomach acid into the esophagus is severe enough to impact the patient’s life and/or damage the esophagus. If your heartburn persists, isn’t relieved by over the counter medications, and interferes with your daily activities, you should consult with a gastroenterologist.
